« The ‘big picture’ : an overview of the relationship between synchronic
and diachronic linguistics »

Most of the data for this talk will be drawn from diachronic phonology,
with a view to trying to understand with some reasonable degree of
precision why we have made progress in this area, and why and when we
have failed to make progress. The focus will be on clarifying which
aspects of phonological history are like those of syntactic history, and
which are distinct. The topic of reconstruction methodology will also be
treated.

*Lundi 16 juin 2008 16.30h à 18.30h Salle 451, 54 bd Raspail*

« What is and what is not syntactic change ? »

A critical survey of some recent approaches to the study of syntactic
change, including but not necessarily limited to the work of Ian
Roberts, Tony Kroch, and David Lightfoot. Focus on clarifying the
notions of ‘change’ and exploring the implications of, e.g., minimalist
assumptions for our understanding of syntactic change.

*Lundi 23 juin 2008 16.30h à 18.30h Salle 451, 54 bd Raspail*

« Phonology, Syntax and Wackernagel’s Law »

A survey of the synchrony and diachrony of second position clitics,
focusing on some of Wackernagel’s original data (Rigvedic Sanskrit), but
keeping the discussion fairly general and non-specialist. What can
become a clitic, and what cannot, and why ?
