*Abstract*: The linguistic data revealed in vernacular glossed (訓点 
kunten) materials have been the main focus of Japanese historical 
linguistics in Japan for the past 75 years, but are virtually unknown in 
the West. I will discuss two facets of them. One is philological and 
historic: the emerging evidence that the complex of kunten technology – 
grammatical glosses, katakana, extensive dry-point glossing – is the 
result of contact with an established glossing practice in Korea 
(Silla), brought to Japan in the 8th century through the medium of Kegon 
(華厳 Huayan) Buddhism. The second is linguistic: kunten materials are 
virtually the only source for the language of the 9th century, 
transitional between Old and Early Middle Japanese. Japanese scholars 
working with 9th century materials have tended to take as point of 
departure EMJ. EMJ syntax and phonology differ significantly from OJ: in 
particular, OJ has a system of clitic, weak, and strong pronouns, the 
first two components of which have vanished by the 10th century. I 
examine the pronominal system as revealed in 9th century kunten and 
mixed (漢字片仮名交じり文 kanji-katakana majiribun) texts and highlight 
features of OJ syntax which survive through the 9th century.

*訓点資料の二側面：韓国の口訣資料との関係及び上代語の代名詞体系との関係

*要旨*　戦前から、訓点資料が日本における日本語史研究の焦点の１つであるに 
もかかわらず、訓点資料やその研究が欧米ではほとんど知られていないと言って 
も過言ではない。本発表では、訓点研究の文献・歴史学的一側面と歴史言語学的 
一側面に触れる。文献学の側面では、過去１０年間、日本の訓点資料と韓国の口 
訣資料の関係が何人かの学者により論じられてきたが、その関係を検討する。歴 
史言語学の側面では、訓点資料、そのほかに訓点資料に影響された９世紀の漢字 
片仮名まじり文である「東大寺諷誦文稿」を根拠にして、上代日本語の統語体 
系、特に代名詞体系がいかに９世紀まで続いたか検討する。
