Appel à communication
L'atelier vise à réunir linguistes (morphologues, syntacticiens et sémanticiens) et philosophes autour des notions de habilité, disposition et état, qui sont des aspects centraux de la généricité, à travers des langues et des catégories grammaticales différentes. Il sera articulé sur les thèmes suivants.
(A) L'atelier considérera la distinction entre des différents types d'états, en examinant la distinction entre individual level et stage level predicates à la lumière de des critiques récentes et nouvelles explications pour ces notions. On discutera du bien fondé de l’argument davidsonien pour tous les prédicats verbaux ou plutôt pour les prédicats d'événements exclusivement. On comparera les approches lexicales aux pragmatiques. 
(B) La question des types différents d'habilités sera discutée. En particulier, l'atelier considérera (parmi des autres):
- la distinction entre différents types d’habilités et d’états (permanents, non permanents, dépendants, … ), et comment cette distinction se fonde dans le lexique et dans la syntaxe
- la distinction entre habilités et dispositions en relation aux instanciations,
- la relation entre habitualité et occasions (manifestée par les expressions adverbiales, when-clauses, le système aspectuel, … ). 
(C) On explorera également la relation entre les habilités et l'aspect verbal et en particulier la distinction entre perfectif et imperfectif. 
(D) L'atelier discutera la relation entre les habilités et les expressions modales. Il considérera la question de la relation entre l'interprétation abilitative et les interprétations épistémiques et déontiques de la modalité, et il comparera des perspectives syntaxiques, lexicales et pragmatiques sur cette question.
(E) On explorera également la question de comment les habilités et les dispositions sont réalisées à la surface en position prédicative (en particulier dans des langues qui ont des noms nus dans cette position ou qui permettent des PPs nus).

Call for Papers

The workshop aims to gather linguists (from the areas of morphology, syntax and semantics) and philosophers around the notions of abilities and dispositions as central aspects of genericity, across languages and grammatical categories. It will be articulated around the following themes.


(A) It will consider the distinction between different types of states, readdressing the distinction between individual level and stage level predicates in light of recent criticism that has been leveled against it. A closely related issue that will be discussed is whether one should posit a Davidsonian argument for (verb) predicates across the board (no matter what the actional type of the predicate) or rather for eventive predicates only.
(B) The issue of different types of abilities will be discussed. In particular, the workshop will consider (among others):
- the question whether one should distinguish between general abilities and action-dependent, short-lived abilities and occasions; and how this distinction is grounded in the lexicon and in the syntax,
- the questions whether abilities and dispositions are one and the same notion or whether only one of these requires instantiations,
- the relation between habituality, occasions and dispositions (as revealed by adverbial expressions, when clauses, the aspectual system, … ).
(C) The workshop will explore the relationship between abilities and aspect: how aspectual distinctions relate to ontological distinctions between types of abilities, and to the issue whether actual instantiations are required.
(D) The workshop will discuss the relation between abilities and modal expressions. It will address the question of the relation between the abilitative interpretation of modality and the deontic and epistemic interpretations. It will compare syntactic, lexical and pragmatic views on the matter. 
(E) Finally, the workshop will explore how abilities and dispositions surface in predicative positions, especially in languages which have bare nouns in this position or allow bare PPs (in contrast with indefinites in the same position).
