Proposing papers and their discussion by leading functionalist
and formalist specialists of the history of negation, the volume offers
a reconceptualisation of the notion of cycle as a consequence of the
development of (families of) items, rather than as a syntactic process
applying uniformly to a language variety. With special emphasis on
English and French, the novel and substantial analyses brought together
here will contribute to move forward the research agenda on the
evolution of grammatical systems.
