John E. Joseph (University of Edinburgh) interviendra ce vendredi 26 avril :

"Divided Allegiance: The Political Imagining of Language Contact and Identity"

"This
 year marks the 60th anniversary of the publication of _Languages in 
Contact_ by Uriel Weinreich, a key event in the study of 
multilingualism, individual as well as societal. The book took its title
 from that of a course given at Columbia University by Weinreich's 
thesis supervisor, André Martinet; and I have taken my main title, 
'divided allegiance', from Martinet's Preface to Weinreich's book, where
 he uses this term to describe bilingualism. The Preface is a curious 
piece that needs some decoding: why, for instance, should the first 
example of bilingualism cited by Martinet be that of shifting from 
English to Russian? Whilst cautioning against any sort of historical 
determinism, I shall note how the lingering effects of the War and the 
immediate politics of the Cold War and McCarthyism made their mark on 
Martinet's and Weinreich's imagining of language contact -- and how the 
first step toward a new understanding of linguistic identity would come 
with an article by Weinreich's student William Labov in 1963, when, in a
 very different political atmosphere, it was possible to conceive of 
'allegiance' as complex, malleable and pragmatic. Following this 
historical introduction, I shall look at conversational data relating to
 current language contact in Scotland, considering how the speakers 
involved appear to conceive of the contact, and how this may relate to 
present-day realities of British and European politics."

Séminaire "Pratiques langagières: terrains, méthodes, théories   (écoles doctorales INALCO et Paris Diderot)

L'objectif de ce séminaire est d'accompagner les étudiants 
(M2/doctorants) travaillant sur des pratiques langagières socialement 
situées, intéressés par les questions de variations et changements 
linguistiques, contacts de langues, mobilités et construction de 
l’identité. Une place importante est laissée aux approches 
méthodologiques et cadres théoriques pertinents (analyse de discours, 
anthropologie linguistique, linguistique du contact, théories de la 
variation etc.).

Compétences mises en oeuvre :
Faire appel aux cadres théoriques 
et méthodologiques adéquats à l’analyse de pratiques langagières situées
 en lien avec des problématiques linguistiques et 
socio-anthropologiques.
