Bonjour,

Vous êtes cordialement invités à la prochaine séance du séminaire LAPS, qui aura lieu le vendredi 29 mars prochain.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Vendredi 29 mars, 15h-17h, D328 (bâtiment D, 3ème étage), Université Paris 8 Vincennes - Saint-Denis.

Véronique Lacoste (Université de Fribourg-en-Brisgau) : « Towards the emergence of a Haitian English variety in Toronto ».

Résumé

French Creole from the Caribbean, including Haitian Creole, has spread globally through migration of speakers to the US, Canada, and France. A large number of speakers of Haitian Creole now live at least as bilinguals in the American (US) and the Canadian diaspora, interacting not only among themselves but also with Anglo Americans, African Americans, Hispanics and immigrants from the Anglophone Caribbean and Africa in conditions which have been described as "super-diversity" (Blommaert & Rampton 2011 ; Vertovec 2007). Their presence is expected to have an impact both on the sociolinguistic landscape of cities like Toronto and on the structure and status of Haitian Creole in its traditional island base - a matter which would be well suited to a sociolinguistics of globalization for instance (Blommaert 2010). In the framework of a sociolinguistics of the diaspora, this paper looks at aspects of the sociological and linguistic situation of Haitians in the city of Toronto by focusing on the development, the structure and the social functioning of their multilingual practices as they target the English language. In a preliminary vein, this talk will raise some issues pertinent to language contact and structural variation between French, French Creole and various English varieties available within the Toronto Haitian community. Sources of language input and linguistic orientation and affiliation will also be discussed, as well as the question of a potentially emerging English variety (or ethnolect) among Toronto Haitians, who must constantly negotiate their linguistic and social identities within the larger cosmopolitan city. This talk is based on my Habilitation (HDR) research project taken in its early stage.
