Phonological Theory Agora
Standup sessions: make a claim and defend it
http://pta.cnrs.fr/
French CNRS and seven partner institutions outside of France have
created a network (called GDRI in the French jargon) designed to promote
discussion around phonological theory: PTA (Phonological Theory Agora).
PTA makes a number of assumptions that frame its activity:
1. both theories of symbolic representations and computation are needed
2. phonology and phonetics are distinct systems
3. demonstrations that are not based on corpus data and/or statistical
relevance may be conclusive
From 2015 to 2018, PTA organizes one conference a year (maybe among
other things), which will be travelling to different cities. The first
venue is Lublin / Poland, and will lean on the APAP conference that two
Lublin Universities organize independently (http://www.apap.kul.pl/):
APAP takes place on June 19th-21st, PTA continues on June 22nd-23rd.
Each PTA venue has a theme. Lublin is about the relationship between
derivation and representation. In order to promote discussion, rather
than professoral declamation, the basic conference format is
standup-style: speakers make a claim and provide supporting argument (10
min.), which is then discussed by the floor (20 min.). Before this
session, the theme is introduced by a tutorial that reports relevant
facs and views.
Submission of (short) one-page abstracts for claim-making standups is
invited until April 15th, to be sent to ptaATcnrs.fr.
More information about the general setup of PTA and the Lublin venue is
available at http://pta.cnrs.fr.
