Rachel,

Snack is the name of the library that Transcriber uses to perform
audio i/o. It sounds like snack is getting stuck trying to read from
the sound file. From the information you provide, I can't tell
why.

(a) what operating system are you using?
(b) does this happen no matter what sound file you try to open?
(c) are you confident that everything is normal with that sound file?
    Are you spelling its name correctly? Are you able to play it
    by other means?
