installing CLAN on Linux

I'm not surprised that your student is having trouble. The CLAN
package as distributed for Unix systems is not properly prepared
for distribution. It lacks installation instructions, does not use
any configuration system and requires manual editing of the Makefile.
The only instructions are to be found in comments in the Makefile,
one of which is erroneous. The CHILDES folks really should get someone
who knows how to prepare a Linux source distribution to do it properly.
That means including README and INSTALL files (and ideally the full
complement of GNU package components) and autoconfiscating the package
(which means setting up the configuration system).

So as not to clutter up this list, I will send some advice separately.
