Placename database query

A very simple and free program is Eagle Data (haven't used it, but I
just downloaded it and gave it a test; very easy):
http://www.eaglesoft.de/eagle/eagledata.html But I think it might not
have enough features for what you are after.
A more appropriate but non-free option for you might be Bento 2
(http://www.filemaker.com/products/bento/overview.html). It is a sort
of slimmed-down version of FileMaker, very easy to use... It's US$50
for a license, and I don't think they offer student discounts. If
you're going to need something really flexible and be used heavily,
this might be a good option. Bento does have a free trial, so you can
try it out and see if it works for you before you shell out any cash
for it.
Cheers,
Chris
