Zoom H1

We got introduced to the H1 during a DRIL workshop with Margaret Florey
and Lesley Woods last month and ordered a couple because we found the H1
so user-friendly. 

The recording quality probably doesn't compare with higher class
recorders but we haven't had a chance to test the H2 and H4n. However,
for under $150 the quality is surprisingly good. Now I don't know how
techies are going to evaluate the quality once they've done a real test
but we did make a series of spectrograms from the recordings (using
Praat) and the results are OK (conclusive enough for my taste).

The one thing I dislike about the H1 is that the recording level
(amplitude) is lowered considerably when using an external mic through
the mic/line-in plug. Therefore we find it easier to use the built-in
mic (though I suspect I'll be scolded for that by many) and still get
acceptable results.

Overall, I think it's incredible value for money for simple day-to-day
use. For high-quality recordings I would always prefer a higher class
recorder. The user-friendliness of the H1 is a very strong plus and
helps even unexperienced users to overcome their fear of "many buttons".


It would be good though to see an in-depth field report for this little
device.

I would recommend you invest the $134.94 for a start and see how well it
works for you, then order more if you are satisfied. It was money
well-invested for us.

Hi everyone,

We are considering purchasing some Zoom H1 recorders for Wangka Maya
language centre. I've read all the discussion on the H4n vs H2, in which
the H4n seems a clear winner, but has anyone had experience using the
H1? What is the quality of the recordings? It is obviously quite a lot
cheaper at
$134.94 (vs $413.31 for the H4n) and seems very portable, easy to use
and easy train others to use. Are there any reasons for choosing the H4n
over the H1?
