Documenting child language
In this session, we will discuss how documenting child language can
contribute to a language documentation project and some practical
aspects of recording child language. Barb Kelly and Lauren Gawne of
the University of Melbourne will lead the discussion. They have
experience documenting child language in Nepal.
Discussion questions:
- Why bother collecting child data? What do we gain from child
language data that we don't gain from adult data.
- What's the difference between collecting child data and adult
speaking to children? Are they both useful?
- What are some of the practical issues with documenting child
language (equipment, ethics, reluctant children, over enthusiastic
children)? What barriers are there to recording children (especially
videos) compared to adults? What impact does this have on a publicly
accessible corpus?
- What outputs should we be focusing on with child data (eg books and
materials).
- What tools can be used to elicit child data? common methodologies
and paradigms (including language socialisation).

LIP is an occasional gathering of language activists and linguists in
Melbourne. All are welcome. Those in other parts of Australia and the
world who can't make it to the Melbourne LIPs are encouraged to
organise a local gathering to discuss this topic and support language
activities in your area.
