Announcement: Linguistics in the Pub / Pullima crossover event Tuesday 27th
2013 - NOTE DIFFERENT VENUE/TIME
For those of you who don't know it yet, the Pullima National Indigenous
language and technology forum 2013 will be held in Melbourne in the last
week of August (http://www.puliima.com/). Pullima is an Indigenous-run
conference that brings together people working on Indigenous languages from
all over Australia.
For the first time, we will hold a crossover event to bring LIP and Pullima
attendees together.
Topic: Getting the message across: talking to the media about Indigenous
languages
Guest participants: Daryn McKenny, Paul Paton, Lauren Gawne
(Superlinguo<http://www.superlinguo.com/>blog/University of
Melbourne), Alice Gaby (Monash University) and
representatives from the media (TBA)
There are so many amazing language-related activities going on in
Indigenous communities around the country. Yet hardly any of it is reported
in the major media and the messages that are reported don't always reflect
the interests and concerns of people involved in language work. When it is,
reporters often misrepresent the issues involved. If language work in
Indigenous communities has a higher profile in the media, it will mean that
the general public understands better the importance of Indigenous
languages. This will also mean better support for Indigenous language
programs. In this special LIP/Pullima crossover event, we will brainstorm
in small groups the questions of ''What are the issues that community
people and linguists would like to highlight in the media” and “How can we
communicate our messages better to the media?”
Session organisers: Daryn McKenny, Ruth Singer, Paul Paton and Alison Soutar
Time: 5:30 -onwards (discussion 6-7pm)

LIP is an occasional gathering of language activists and linguists in
Melbourne. All are welcome. Those in other parts of Australia and the
world who can't make it to the Melbourne LIPs are encouraged to
organise a local gathering to discuss this topic and support language
activities in your area.
