Announcement: Linguistics in the Pub Monday 5th August 2013
Note! This meeting is on Monday night, rather than a Tuesday as is usual
Topic: Reclaiming Indigenous language through linguistics
Session organiser: Cameron Algie
At Linguistics in the Pub this August we will consider the issue of
language reclamation, with a perspective on activities in the field in
both South Australia and Victoria; our guests are Ghil'ad Zuckerman
(Adelaide University), Christina Eira (VACL) and Aunty Fay
Stewart-Muir (VACL). They will be discussing their ongoing work to
educate Koorie and Nunga people about their traditional languages, and
to inform the community at large about the vital importance of
Indigenous language. In his work, Ghil'ad Zuckerman considers issues
such as moral imperatives for maintaining Indigenous language,
conceptualizing language loss, and the basis for collaborative work in
Indigenous communities. The Victorian Aboriginal Corporation for
Languages (VACL) has been involved in language reclamation projects
through analysis of historical archives and records, and community
based projects aimed to improve personal esteem and self-worth through
a deepened knowledge of linguistic cultural history.

LIP is an occasional gathering of language activists and linguists in
Melbourne. All are welcome. Those in other parts of Australia and the
world who can't make it to the Melbourne LIPs are encouraged to
organise a local gathering to discuss this topic and support language
activities in your area.
