CALL FOR ABSTRACTS: "CELEBRATING TOK PISIN & TOK PLES"
The 2014 annual meeting of the Linguistic Society of Papua New Guinea will
be held at Divine Word University in Madang, Papua New Guinea 17-19
September. Although the theme this year will be "Celebrating Tok Pisin &
Tok Ples", abstracts are invited for presentations on all languages of
Melanesia, including Hiri Motu, English, and Papuan Malay on topics such as
grammatical analysis, phonology, language documentation, language
endangerment, sociolinguistics, the history and classification of
languages, pidgin and creole studies, educational linguistics, language and
music, child or second language acquisition, and the development of
literature in languages of Melanesia. There will be a special session set
aside for presentations by students at universities in Papua New Guinea and
Indonesian Papua.
Presentations will be 20 minutes, with 10 minutes for discussion. The
proceedings will appear as a special issue of Language and Linguistics in
Melanesia, the online LSPNG journal (www.langlxmelanesia.com).
Please send abstracts in English (maximum 300 words) by the end of May 2014
to cvolker at dwu.ac.pg.
The day preceding the conference will be Papua New Guinea Independence Day,
which Madang celebrates with the Madang Show near the Divine Word
University campus. Conference participants will be welcome to come a few
days early to enjoy this colourful celebration of indigenous Madang
culture. The people of Madang are well known in Papua New Guinea for their
friendliness and hospitality to newcomers. Madang Town is a well known
tourist destination in Madang, with accommodation of various standards of
comfort. Conference organisers are trying to arrange special accommodation
discounts for participants. For further details or assistance with

Madang is connected by three airlines (Air Niugini, Airlines PNG and the
new discount airline Travelair) to the international airport in Port
Moresby (POM) and, for visitors arriving overland from Jayapura, Indonesia,
to Vanimo airport (VAI) in northwestern PNG. International participants
needing assistance making bookings can contact the DWU travel agent, Global
Travel (dealedona at dwu.ac.pg).
