*Announcement: Melbourne Linguistics in the Pub Tuesday 30th August 2016*

*Ethics in linguistic fieldwork*

In this month’s *Linguistics in the Pub*, we will discuss George van
Driem’s (2016) recent opinion article in *Language Documentation and
Conservation*, which heavily criticises current ethics protocols in
language documentation. We take a broader perspective here, addressing
interrelations (and tensions) between different ethical issues in language
documentation and linguistic research more generally, as there are: ethics
clearance procedures in academic institutions, the ethics of collaborative
fieldwork, and empowerment and involvement of communities and their members
in academic research, as well as scholarly ethics and its commitment to
open science.

*Core reading:*

depravity of ethics protocols. *Language Documentation and Conservation *10,
