Hello all,
For those of you lucky enough to be in Melbourne on 8 May, we've got a very
special Linguistics in the Pub for you. See below for details.
*How linguists can support community-led language revitalisation*
*Discussion led by*: Emma Murphy (RNLD)
While the statistics regarding Australian Indigenous languages can
sometimes seem a bit disheartening, there are many Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander people working hard to maintain, revitalise and reclaim
their linguistic heritage across the country. Much of this work would be
impossible without the language documentation done by linguists past and
present, but perhaps there are ways linguists can further strengthen their
relationships with language communities and help develop resources that are
more easily accessible to the wider community.
The Resource Network for Linguistic Diversity (RNLD) is currently running a
project to develop a template for community-based learners’ grammars for
Aboriginal languages in a revitalisation or reclamation context, in
collaboration with participants from language groups around the country. In
this special LIP session, Emma Murphy from RNLD will lead a discussion with
some of these Indigenous language activists to explore these questions and
more:
- What are the needs of Aboriginal language communities when it comes to
revitalising languages?
- What are academic linguists currently doing to help meet these needs?
- What are some different possible models for partnerships between
Aboriginal communities and linguists that can satisfy everybody’s aims?
