*The role of ultrasound in linguistic description, theory and application*

*Discussion led by: Sam Kirkham, Lancaster University*

Ultrasound tongue imaging has revolutionised linguistic speech research as
it has allowed us to image the movements of the tongue using a low-cost and
portable technique. This is likely to pave the way for significant
developments in language description, and has already enhanced our
understanding of speech dynamics, sound change and linguistic theory.
Current work is also beginning to explore applications of ultrasound tongue
imaging, particularly for second language learning and speech therapy. In
this session, we will discuss future directions for ultrasound research,
particularly in relation to L2 speech, bilingualism and migration. We will
address shortcomings of the approach and how it might be combined with
other modalities and methods in order to further enhance our understanding
of the dynamics of language.
