The Department of Linguistics at the University of Alberta invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor in Indigenous Language Sustainability (ILS). This full time appointment is effective July 1, 2020.
Applicants must hold a PhD in Linguistics or an allied field and have experience with fieldwork and community-based documentation or ethnography of Indigenous languages, preferably in the languages of the Americas. Applicants must demonstrate evidence of peer-reviewed scholarly publications and relevant teaching. The successful candidate’s research could include, but is not limited to, Indigenous/endangered language documentation, the sociocultural dynamics of language and language revitalization, and/or development of technologies in support of endangered language sustainability.
The Department seeks candidates with extensive background in and knowledge of issues pertaining to Indigenous peoples, and experience with community-engaged research working with Indigenous communities. Successful candidates will be expected to develop an innovative externally-funded research program, supervise and mentor graduate students, and provide service to the Department, Faculty, University, and discipline. The successful candidate will also be expected to offer courses in linguistics at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, including courses in an area of specialization and ILS-related subfields. Qualified applicants from endangered language communities and/or speakers of languages indigenous to the Americas are especially encouraged to apply.
The Department of Linguistics (https://www.ualberta.ca/linguistics) is a world-renowned centre in the empirical study of human language, with faculty specializing in the areas of language acquisition, psycholinguistics, phonetics, phonology, sociolinguistics, corpus linguistics, language documentation and revitalization, and language technologies. Our faculty and students are leaders in the documentation of the languages of the Americas, and currently conduct research in locations ranging from Alaska and Alberta to Mesoamerica and the Amazon. The Department is also home to the Canadian Indigenous Languages and Literacy Development Institute (http://www.cilldi.ualberta.ca<http://www.cilldi.ualberta.ca/>), which hosts an annual summer school providing basic training in linguistics, second language pedagogy, and other aspects of ILS aimed at speakers of Indigenous languages.
