Dear users of ELAN,
As you may have read, Han Sloetjes, who has been developing ELAN for over
20 years, will be retiring at the end of this year. His work will be
continued by two other developers at our institute, so there's no need to
worry about the future of ELAN, but we will certainly miss Han’s expertise,
thoughtful engagement with the ELAN community, and his kind, collegial
presence.
To celebrate Han's contributions, I thought it would be a nice idea to
create a retirement gift in the form of a book filled with testimonies,
stories, photographs, screenshots, etc., highlighting how ELAN has impacted
your professional lives. We know that ELAN is a highly valued tool not only
in linguistics but also across many research fields, but most of the
feedback we receive tends to focus on issues or additional feature
requests, so this is a chance to share the positive influence ELAN has had
on your work.
I invite you to submit a brief (around one page) testimony or story about
what ELAN has meant to you, or how you’ve been using it in your work. You
might also include photos e.g. from a fieldwork situation, a classroom
setting, or screenshots showing the types of annotations you perform with
ELAN. A personal note to Han is of course also welcome. This would be a
nice way to express our appreciation for Han’s dedication over the years.
Please note, this collection is purely meant as a personal gift and we will
not publish your materials beyond this purpose without your explicit
permission.
Please send your texts and/or materials to Paul.Trilsbeek at mpi.nl by *October
31st *to give us enough time to compile the book. I’ll send occasional
reminders as the deadline approaches.
Best wishes,
Paul Trilsbeek
