1988 Text 8(3) article as an abridgement

Dear RST list members:
When the well known paper by Mann and Thompson in Text 8(3) appeared in
1988, it was an abridgment of a much larger report. Editorial
considerations led to deletion of whole sections and of much of the
explanatory text about examples of relations. It also led to deletion of
the entire discussion of the prior art, leading to a false impression that
awareness of it and credit to it were improperly missing. This was a source
of distress to both the authors and some colleagues.
Given the capacities of the Internet to accommodate large quantities of
text, it is now possible to show the missing information, which was on over
50 pages of that report.
I have scanned those pages, and made them available with explanatory text on
my personal linguistic website, http://www-rcf.usc.edu/~billmann . (Follow
the link "50+ pages.") The set of pages is not a coherent text without the
journal article, but for relation examples, references and terminology it
should be useful.
As far as I know, they should display properly through all browsers. (If
you have trouble, please let me know.)
The site also has a couple of recent submissions on RST, one on implicit
communication and one on scientific status.
Happy surfing.
Bill Mann
