The Cornell Conference on Language and Poverty will be held on October
14-16, 2005.
We've lined up a very impressive list of outside participants, as well as
local commentators from across the university, and this promises to be an
exceptionally interesting event.

This conference has two central objectives: (1) to highlight the complex
interconnections of language and poverty for a general audience, and (2) to
promote exchange at both theoretical and practical levels among linguists
and scholars of language (including those still being trained in graduate
programs) and others (especially those active in community-based programs)
on work with endangered languages in impoverished communities. Day one of
the proposed conference pursues the first objective of outreach and general
education; day two is devoted to the second and more specialized effort.

Day 1

Poverty as a Factor in Language Maintenance and Language Death

Keynote speaker: Leanne Hinton

Panel Discussion by Herman Batibo, Matthias Brenzinger, and Ofelia Zepeda
on the effect of access to resources on the maintenance of minority languages.

Language and Access to Resources

Keynote Speaker: John Baugh

Panel Discussion by Neville Alexander, Ofelia Garcia, and Ajit Mohanty on
the relation between the languages people speak or do not speak and their
economic status.

Day 2

and Preservation

o Workshop on Community-Based Language Maintenance Programs

o Workshop on the Role of the Linguist in Language Maintenance and

Dwyer, Ian Maddieson, Lenore Grenoble, Keren Rice, Norvin Richards, Barry
Supple, and Doug Whalen.
Keynote Speaker: Suzanne Romaine

If you know of people at other institutions who might be interested in
attending, you should tell them about it; we anticipate that some
scholarship funds will available to help defray lodging costs for students
and others wishing to attend the conference. Further information is
