The Department of Asian Languages and Cultures at the
University of Michigan invites applications for the position
of Coordinator of Korean and Southeast Asian Languages
starting September 1, 2008. This position will provide
supervision and leadership for the team of faculty teaching
Filipino, Indonesian, Javanese, Korean, Thai, and Vietnamese
(7 FTE).  In addition this faculty member will participate in
teaching one of the languages in the program.   This position
is subject to final budgetary approval.

 

Responsibilities include 8-9 instructional hours a week,
active leadership in curricular and program affairs, and
supervision of program faculty (particularly focused
mentorship for new faculty). The Coordinator of Korean &
Southeast Asian Languages is a member of the department’s
Language Program Committee. 

 

Applicants should have an MA in a relevant field such as the
following: Korean or SEA language, literature, and
linguistics, Korean or SEA Studies, second language
acquisition, TESL, education, communications, etc.  Native or
near-native competence in English and in Korean or one of the
Southeast Asian languages that we teach (Filipino, Indonesian,
Javanese, Thai, and Vietnamese) is required.  The successful
applicant will have at least two years of experience in
teaching language at the college/university level, knowledge
of US educational system, and familiarity with language
teaching methodologies as well as computer-assisted language
instruction. Expertise and experience in curriculum and
program development are preferred.

 

A complete dossier includes a letter of application explaining
your qualifications and teaching philosophy, a statement
discussing the value of a cross language pedagogical team, a
current CV, evidence of teaching excellence, a teaching demo
DVD, and three letters of recommendation.  Samples of
materials and/or project development are strongly recommended.
