Fifth International Conference on Austroasiatic Linguistics (ICAAL 5)
Bangkok, November 9 - 12, 2011
Painting the Austroasiatic Family Portrait
Second Call for Abstracts
Following on the great success of meetings in Pune (India) in 2007 and Bangkok
(Thailand) in 2009, the International Conference on Austroasiatic Linguistics
returns to Bangkok in 2011. An important outcome of the 2009 ICAAL was the
certainty that the time had come to produce a comprehensive, canonical
reference to the Austroasiatic language family. We invite you to make your
contribution to the “table of contents” and coverage of this much-needed work.
For the 2011 ICAAL conference we encourage submissions that look at the family
from all theoretical and practical viewpoints, and contribute to painting a
complete picture of Austroasiatic as a complex language family with deep roots
across India, China, and the countries of Southeast Asia.
To ensure ample time for discussion, ICAAL 5 will have only two parallel sessions.
Topics will include, but are not limited to:
* Language documentation and description
* Typological studies
* Genetic and areal classification
* Historical and comparative reconstruction
* Phonetic and phonological studies
* Language endangerment, maintenance and revival efforts
* Computational methods
* Epigraphy
* Language and Culture
* Discourse
* Semantics and Pragmatics
* Deadline for abstracts: August 15, 2011
* Notice of acceptance: September 1, 2011 (early notification on request)
Expressions of Interest:
Don’t wait until the abstract deadline to let us know you are coming! Please
email a brief expression of interest (name, affiliation, proposed topic of
presentation) at the earliest opportunity to:
Paul Sidwell <paulsidwell at yahoo.com>
Sophana Srichampa <sophana at gmail.com>
Financial Assistance:
Participants who present papers, and who are citizens of South and
Southeast Asian countries outside of Thailand, are eligible for need-based
financial aid to assist conference attendance. As in 2009, this will be a
combination of travel assistance (up to $500, depending on distance)
and/or conference fee waiver. These honoraria will be given to recipients
on arrival and registration at ICAAL. Honoraria will not be paid in advance
of the conference date.
