The European Research Council (ERC) has awarded a grant in excess of €7m to
support research into the histories, languages, religions and cultures of Asia
in the 4th, 5th and 6th centuries CE. The project is based in the British
Museum, the British Library and the School of Oriental and African Studies.
The project team consists of three investigators, seven research assistants
and a network of collaborators across Europe and Asia.

*Key areas of responsibility:*

• Responsible for assembling and transliterating Pyu epigraphic monuments.
• Responsible for deciphering Pyu by making use of bilingual Pyu documents
and comparisons to cognate Tibeto-Burman languages.
• Responsible for assisting in the study of proto-Burmish reconstruction,
particularly with the aim of providing a point of comparison in Pyu decipherment.
• Responsible for the contributing to the development of online computer
tools in service of the preceding three responsibilities.
• Any other tasks as required of the role

*Person Specification:*

Candidates will have a PhD (or equivalent) in Asian linguistics or a closely
related subject. Additionally, the successful applicant will have
comprehensive knowledge of Asian linguistics and linguistic theory and
methodology, knowledge of Sino-Tibetan languages and a demonstrated interest
and capacity in relevant IT technologies. Applicants must have strong
organisational skills, an ability to conduct fieldwork in Asia, demonstrated
abilities in planning and writing scholarly publications, a capacity to
productively interact with research colleagues and an ability to speak about
their research.
