I agree with Bob Beard. I'm sure others out there could cite similar
examples, but the situation of Bulgarian linguists in Bulgaria is a good
lesson in what can result when linguists and linguistics get sucked into
political issues related to nationality, etc. (many of them against their
will, NB). There has been, incidentally, a thread on languages and
dialects running for the past several weeks on LINGUIST, for those of you
who aren't on that list.
