Origins of the word "kopijka" in Ukrainian

    Please excuse the instrusion, and accept my apologies if this question is
off-topic for this group.

    With the introduction of the new currency in Ukraine, a debate of sorts
has arisen about the choice of the name "kopijka" for the change/coin
denomination.  I have heard quite a few expressions, or at least hints, of
indignation for continuing to use a Soviet (read Russian) denomination of
currency.  So my question is this:  is "kopijka" borrowed from the Russian
"kopejka" or does it have older roots in Ukrainian (and its precursors).
