I've found that relating words historically is an interesting way to create
word lists.
Take a look at this short historical intro part to a paper on the
Russian-English lexis.  There is a section of words lists, by historical
period, that will be added to the online paper this summer.  It's already
written--just need to find the time to put it online.
Students like this historical aspect.
