The first Russian language textbook in English, A Practical Grammar
of the Russian Language, by James Heard, St Petersburg, 1827,
contains at the end a series of thematic vocabularies, of which the
first includes "Spiritual Objects". Though this is the first example
in English, the practice of including thematic vocabularies goes back
to the first ever published grammar of Russian, H.W.Ludolf,
Grammatica Russica, Oxford, 1696.
Though this is likely to be of only antiquarian interest for the
modern learner, it may be of interest nevertheless. It also reminds
us to be wary of claiming originality in teaching methods!
More practically, those with a serious interest in Russian religious
terminology might find it worth consulting Martine Roty,
Dictionnaire russe-français des termes en usage dans l'église russe,
2e. éd., Paris, 1984.
