It depends what machines you mean. Cassette tape recorders (modern)
usually uses DC drive motors with stabilized power supply. Some sort
of tape recorders - mainly using spool tapes (refered to by Andrew Jameson)
and especially master studio recorders have AC drive motors. Here
the frequency of main power supply is crucial.
