R: Question on Russian culinary history

In Slovak Republic and Hungary is the same practise of forced-feeding the
geese.They gave them Indian corn.When I was a little child and asked why do
they
feed the goose  that way (it's really very strange to see how they force
them - I was told that it is because the goose is lazy and will not eat
alone and can't swallow.But it will be ,perhaps,because the maize -feeding
helps to put
the weight in shorter time .Katarina
