"THE IMPACT OF BOURDIEU ON CULTURAL STUDIES"

Pierre Bourdieu has been a critical, sometimes controversial figure in the
French debates about the nature and study of social life. Bourdieu first
came to English speaking audiences through the humanities and, in cultural
studies in particular, by way of the Birmingham School's early work on style
and youth culture. Although his work has only in the past decade become
widely known in America, it has nonetheless been influential within
sociology, cultural studies, literary studies, and. The journal, Cultural
Studies, will devote a special double issue to Pierre Bourdieu, focusing on
the impact of his work on the field of American cultural studies.
Original essays addressing but not limited to the following topics are
especially welcome:
Investigations using research strategies informed by Bourdieu's work;
Comparison of dominant theories or ideas in cultural studies and Bourdieu's
work;
Explorations of the tensions, commonalities, problems, and complexities of
theoretical aspects of his work;
Bourdieu's reception by the American academy;
Use of Bourdieu's work as applied to contemporary social problems;
Case studies that exemplify how Bourdieu has influenced various disciplines
(media studies, business, religion, self-help, and so forth).
Papers should not exceed 35 pages. The deadline for submissions is March 15,
2002.
Papers should be in English. One hardcopy and one electronic copy should be
submitted to Mary S. Pileggi or Cynthia A. Patton.
