Two-Year Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Politics, Culture, and Identity.
The Watson Institute for International Studies of Brown University seeks
a recent Ph.D. for a two-year postdoctoral fellowship to participate in
the Institute's Research Program on Politics, Culture, and Identity
(PCI), beginning July 1, 2003. Applicants should be working on 19th-20th
century East-Central or East European History (anywhere between the
Baltic and the Balkans, the eastern borders of Germany to western
Russia, including areas formerly under Ottoman rule), with an interest
in interethnic relations and comparative history. Ability to work with a
number of relevant languages and experience with archival documentation
is desirable. In addition to continuing work on her/his own research,
the successful candidate will (1) teach one course per year in his/her
area of specialty; (2) play an active role in the research activities of
the PCI program and in the intellectual life of the Institute more
generally; and (3) participate in an interdisciplinary, international
research project exploring the origins and manifestations of ethnic
violence in the borderlands of Eastern Europe and its impact on the
continent as a whole. The project focuses especially on the mechanisms
that trigger extreme violence between and within multi-ethnic
communities. A Ph.D. by June 2003 is required. $32,500 annual (12-month)
salary, plus individual health benefits and some research funds. For
