If a non-expert can put a word in, I believe that there are a lot of people not fully communicating here about íà çäîðîâüå. As Mr. Lotoshko points out, a Russian will often reply to a toast with íà çäîðîâüå meaning "thanks for the good thoughts. Perhaps some of us non-natives pick up on this ðåïëèêà and chime in íà çäîðîâüå, thinking we are toasting instead of replying. Thus, we come away with the notion that íà çäîðîâüå is the original "to one's health" that çà çäîðîâüå or some other toast got started.
