Langston Hughes's autobiography, "I Wonder as I Wander,"
has an interesting account of his visit to Moscow and
Soviet Central Asia in 1932, and he talks some
about people's reactions to him.  The sections on travelling
through Samarkand, part of the time with the fastidious
Arthur Koestler, are worth reading!
