Question about length of Russian visa for students

SEELANGSers!

A Russian university with which we are currently working is issuing our
students invitations for single-entry, 3-month (90-day) visas - which,
understandably, is problematic for semester-long study abroad. The
university claims that "regulations" limit it to this visa for invitations
to foreign teachers, students, and professors. The university also says that
the visas can then be extended through through the local authorities once
the foreigner has arrived in-country.

My question: is this true? Are the days of the longer, multi-entry visas for
students and scholars truly over?

Curiously,

Nicole
