I would definitely recommend having the visa converted to multi-entry.
You will eliminate a lot of headaches in the future, especially if you
travel often, should you bypass the necessity for a new exit visa each
time you want to travel. Your university will likely not do this by
default, as it entails some additional costs up front. I would offer
to cover the extra cost up front, as it is usually minimal.
