This knowledge _is_ widespread still and it was even more widespread then -- with majority of dogs not being sterilized you can come across the so-called dogs' weddings every now and then.    
I've seen couple of dozens as a kid myself.    
And in rural areas this is a part of daily life.    
I would say that this sexual connotation makes referring to one's greediness just more derogatory.
