what is the deal with Medvedev?

I have missed the beginning of this fascinating thread, and am a little
puzzled by its intensity.

It didn't seem to bother Slavists that most Americans say "GOR-bachev" and
"P'iut'n."

Why such relentless efforts to achieve the highest degree of authenticity in
pronouncing the name of the current president-elect? Is someone training to
infiltrate the Kremlin as a spy?
