I would recommend Alexei Yurchak's "Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No
More: The Last Soviet Generation." (Princeton University Press,2005). Also,
Svetlana Boym's "Common Places" might be useful.*
* And, of course, this is a very big question, but, probably, not so much
about books or articles on a particular topic, but about the technology of
research work. While access to "international" academic information is still
a problem at many post-Soviet universities, I beleive that Russian National
Library (former Leninka) has internet access to many databases and
definitely to major journals in humanities and social sciences. So I would
recommend starting there.
