Saussure himself acknowledged the influence of William Dwight 
Whitney, one of only a tiny group of
19th Century American scholars whose works were routinely cited in 
contemporary European scholarship.  I wonder when
Whitney's work, esp. On the Material and Form in Language (1872), The 
Science of Language (1872)  and The Life and Growth of Language: An 
Outline of Linguistic Science (1875) first appeared in Russia?
