"Monte Cristo," but not the count

I'm revising a translation that I've completed of Boris Poplavsky's "Apollon Bezobrazov" and am now puzzling over certain artifacts from Paris in the 1920s. One is "Monte Cristo." From context, it seems to refer to an air rifle: "V tirakh khlopaiut Monte-Kristo." Any suggestions about meaning, or an idea of the derivation? Thanks. John Kopper
