*RUS 420 Topics in Russian History: Russian America 1733-1867 

This course examines Russian expansion eastward, the conquest of Russian Alaska and its 126-year history as reflected in the biographies of key individuals who figured in the exploration and development of the colony. Grades will be based in equal parts on daily in-class writing, one oral presentation and one five-page research paper. Conducted in Russian, the course is appropriate for upper-intermediate and advanced students of Russian and for native speakers.

**RUS 421 Topics in Contemporary Russian Culture: Political Influences in Russia Today

This course examines factors such as migration, ethnic relations and religion that influence political processes in contemporary Russia. Grades will be based on midterm and final examinations. Conducted in Russian, the course is appropriate for upper-intermediate and advanced students of Russian and for native speakers.
