Visa Registration in Russia

Dear Dr. Orlov,

Your friends must have been luckier than we were when we tried doing that a few (at least six) years ago.  We paid for one night at a hotel, the hotel stamp reflected the exact date, and that was that.  Then we had to go to OVIR ourselves together with the person at whose house we were staying and get registration for three or four more weeks.  

Things must have changed since then, so thank you for the clarification.
