Dear all,
The 28 July issue of the Spectator includes my review of a recent book about Russian wooden churches:

I can't recommend this book too highly. It is not just a collection of pretty pictures (though the photographs are remarkable), but a book produced with real intelligence and imagination. The texts accompanying the pictures are from a huge variety of sources and they are very enlightening indeed: about everything from Russian peasant life before the Revolution to the conduct of Soviet anti-religious campaigns.
The book is, above all, a reminder of the desperate need for more attention to be focussed on the conservation of these precious but fragile buildings.
All the best,
Robert
