Maybe it's worth pointing out that the Petit Larousse has an entry "coche"
defined as "femelle du cochon, truie" and a truie is also defined as a
female pig. I have always thought of "-on" as a diminutive or hypocoristic
suffix, as in salon, raton, etc. Interestingly for Iroquoianists, the name
Huron is said to be based on "hure", which is a boar's head. Evidently the
French were impressed by the Hurons' haircuts.
