Following a nasal consonant there doesn't seem to be contrast between oral and nasal vowels in Lakota and most other Siouan languages.  In Omaha and Ponca there are recent m's and n's from W and R, but Kathy Shea has gotten vowel nasalization even in these cases.  So, you're right, not so stable.
