Frida could also be short for something fuller, such as Elfriede.

Looking at the holocaust lists, I wonder if the spelling "Frieda" is used by German speakers, while "Frida" is a transliteration from Cyrillic or an adaptation of the name in other languages like Polish, Czech or Hungarian. The Hungarian name seems to be written with the "i".

If Frida was a student of Franz Boas, wouldn't there be academic records somewhere that would tell where she was from?
