Interment and Memorial for Bob Rankin

Hi, Dave, and All other SCLC folks,

The Louisiana meeting sounds great, and I hope it all works out. For those who just presented in Madison, anyone who doesn't mind sharing their talk as a draft, it would be greatly appreciated. I was very sorry to miss the event, but a death in the family prevented that from happening after all. I guess it was fortuitous that I hadn't tried to do a paper this year under the circumstances.

By the way, it has been good to see all the news about the Crow/Mandan/Hidatsa and Lakhota language institutes in the Language Conservancy publicity - kudos to everyone, and it was a great picture of Randy Gracyzk, John Boyle, & Armik in the next-to-last issue. Wish I knew how to 'ski-ri-ri' for you all (other folks call it 'lulu', but that could be the next discussion - what term does your language use for the wonderful sound of pride that women give to honor a loved one?

Thanks in advance, everyone!

Sincerely,
Jill

David,
since I’m not institutionally affiliated I would need to have sponsorship…. possibly from the tribe there?
I could do local school/community presentations.
If you have any connections there perhaps you could forward my links to them?
Until soon,
Kevin

Hi Kevin,

I'm afraid I didn't attend the SCLC last year, so, unfortunately, I didn't see your presentation. But I think basically anything related to Siouan and Caddoan culture would be fair game for the SCLC, especially if linguistics and language are incorporated into it, but other members who've been with the SCLC longer might be better judges of that. I'm still awaiting further word on Marksville, Louisiana being the location of our next meeting - hopefully I'll get some more feedback this weekend. We may want to look into alternatives just in case, but personally I think Louisiana would be great for an SCLC meeting, especially with Tulane U. being not so far away. And it's pretty much in the middle of Caddoan country too.

hi David,
on a different topic… you may remember my presentation at the Sitting Bull College Siouan Linguistics meeting?
Let me know if you think there may interest in my presentations at your Tunica/Biloxi meeting. Perhaps I could do community outreach presentations on Siouan music and dance traditions?

Let me know if you have any ideas in this regard?

Hi all,

The date and time have been set for Bob's Kaw Nation memorial service. It will be held on Saturday, June 28 at 1:00 p.m. in Washunga Cemetery in Newkirk, Oklahoma. There will be several speakers, including Kaw Tribal elders and students involved in Kaw language classes. The granite headstone will be imprinted in both Kaw and English.

If you'd like to attend, the closest accommodations would be in Ponca City, Oklahoma, about 12 miles south, or in Arkansas City, Kansas, about the same distance north.

Feel free to call me if you have any questions at 580-269-2552 x 228<tel:580-269-2552%20x%20228>.
