CALL FOR PRESENTATIONS

SRRC 1999 CONFERENCE:  A CONTINUUM OF SERVICES
THE DEAF STUDENT IN POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION


Invitation
        The Southwest Regional Resource Center invites proposals for its
conference in July 1999.  One of the major goals of SRRC is to provide
outreach and technical assistance for professionals who work with students
at the post secondary level who are deaf and hard of hearing.  This
conference will be an opportunity for further professional development as
well as networking with peers who provide similar services.  Any person
whose work affects this population is welcome to submit a proposal.
        The southwest Regional Resource Center at Pikes Peak Community
College in Colorado Springs, Colorado, is a Hub of Western Region Outreach
Center & Consortia (WROCC) at the National Center on Deafness California
State University Northridge.

Deadline
        A completed program proposal submission form must be received by May
1, 1999.  We regret that it is not possible to offer honoraria; however,
registration fees will be waived for presenters.

Conference Information
        The conference will open on Thursday evening, July 15, with a panel
presentation.  Workshops during the conference will be scheduled for 90
minutes or two hours.  The conference will close with a two-hour plenary
session on the morning of July 17.
        The conference offers an opportunity to bring a variety of
professionals together including administrators, counselors, interpreters,
tutors, and faculty members from developmental studies as well as
college-level courses.  Interested secondary-level faculty and staff and
adult service providers from rehabilitation agencies and centers for
independent living may also participate.  When developing workshop
proposals, please keep the needs and interests of these groups in mind.
        The conference would like to offer sessions with practical,
replicable strategies for providing services to students who are deaf or
hard of hearing and attending post secondary educational programs.  Topics
may include areas such as:

best practices of providing services
use of networking
shifting roles of professional staff
use of technology
changing demographics
the impact of legislative changes, creative funding approaches
student retention and transition
support services (including interpreters, note takers, tutors, technology)
meeting the needs of nontraditional and under represented populations
student development and student life issues
career planning and job placement issues
staff development and administrative concerns
academic issues in mainstream classes as well as in developmental studies
courses.
